Mailing out 14,000 rates notices up to four times a year has become a costly and environmentally unfriendly exercise for Kempsey Shire Council, with just over $120,000 allocated in Council’s budget to postage expenses.
To reduce this expense, Council is currently running a competition to encourage ratepayers to select to have their rates notice emailed out.
Council’s Director of Community Engagement, Kathy Oliver said this type of incentive program has been used by many Councils.
By opting for notices to be sent to your email will mean a fast, reliable and environmentally friendly alternative to paper copies.
It also means that Council can re-direct the money saved towards programs that will benefit the community.
“Unlike other organisations Local Government can’t charge for issuing paper copies of accounts to help recover postage and printing costs so we are appealing to the ratepayers to help achieve this efficiency gain.”
“It is estimated that through this incentive Council will recover the one off costs of the competition by reducing the costs of print production and postage,” Ms Oliver said.
Ratepayers who make the change before Wednesday 31 August will automatically go into the draw to win $2,000 off their rates bill.

The competition is not open to Councillors or Council staff.
