Pilots from Kempsey flew in to Taree to join local pilots for a seminar by aviation safety advisor from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority Teraya Miller, held at Manning River Aero Club.

The focus of this seminar was ‘partial engine loss after take off’ and ‘fuel management’.
Teraya reviewed a relatively recent accident where a plane crashed due to fuel starvation but still had more than 200 litres of fuel on board.
The pilot had failed to select the correct fuel tank and died in the crash.
She indicated that in the period between 2000 and 2015, nine deaths occurred due to ‘partial’ engine failure after take off incidents, due mainly to pilot overload, but no fatal incidents in the same period when a total engine failure after take-off occurred.
Teraya also reviewed the use of electronic flight bags where pilots now use iPads to store maps and plot their course and the problems associated with their use, mainly in the area of restricted airspace incursions.
“Seminars such as this held regularly through Australia by CASA help reduce the risk of flying accidents and fatalities in general aviation,” said Manning River Aero Club’s chief flying instructor Mike Nolan.
