Multiple homes were robbed overnight on Wednesday, October 26, with police warning that thieves would be active with the return of warmer weather.
Mid North Coast crime prevention officer, Senior Constable Steve Cherry, said that many robberies could be prevented by taking simple steps to secure the home.
“The main thing is for people to lock their doors and windows, whether they are home or not at home,” Senior Constable Cherry said.
“The majority of the time we find these people are walking the streets and just checking doors and windows until they find one that is unlocked.”
Senior Constable Cherry said that residents had to get in the habit of locking their doors and windows, even in idyllic towns like South West Rocks.
“The days of leaving your door unlocked are over,” he said.
One of the residents who had her home robbed said that it was “absolutely” disappointing when incidents like this strike the South West Rocks community.
“It’s like they’ve canvassed the street,” said the Ocean Street woman, who declined to be named.
“It happens around this time in South West Rocks every year.”
Police advise that anyone visiting during holidays also take precautions to prevent theft of personal property.
These include not leaving surfboards, wetsuits, and boogie boards out in the open, locking cabin and caravan doors, and avoiding leaving valuables in vehicles overnight or in plain sight.
Police ask anyone who is the victim of a stealing to report their loss straight away.
