The upgrade, being delivered in partnership with Kempsey Shire Council and the South West Rocks Sport and Recreation Association, sought feedback on a draft design and the priorities for equipment through a community survey, conducted earlier this year. 

This feedback and the ongoing discussions with the association’s steering committee, allowed the council to agree to a design that fitted within the available budget but could also be expanded if community support was able to reduce the overall construction and installation costs. 

The community has been quick to respond with an overwhelming amount of residents and tradespeople jumping on board to offer free labour or donating materials where necessary. Volunteers have helped with the construction of new decking, earthmoving and landscaping and have held several fundraisers.

Council’s Coordinator Civic Services Steve Pellen commended the South West Rocks community for being so proactive with the project and rallying around to not only help but fundraise in order to purchase additional playground equipment. 

“We have had major pledges from local businesses, tradespeople and residents who have generously given up their time to help us on this project,” Mr Pellen said. 

“While the council had a budget for this upgrade, with the help from the community we have been able to make this an even better asset for the residents and visitors to the area. It’s a fantastic achievement and something the community should be proud of.”  

New equipment began to be installed at the playground as of Monday 31 October with works to be completed by the end of November 2016, ahead of the peak tourist and holiday season.
