This week is National Recycling Week and it is a good reminder that we all should stop and think before throwing unwanted waste in the bin. Council is committed to keeping up with world best practice waste management so that we help the environment and save money by keeping our waste management costs down.

Council offers many free services to our community for recycling and safe waste disposal, including free recycling services for unwanted empty crop and animal health chemical containers – drumMUSTER – and unwanted mobile phones – MobileMuster.
If you are busy spring cleaning and need to dispose of old electronic equipment or used paint, gas bottles, motor oils and batteries, make the job easier by using our Mobile Community Recycling Centre. The trailer is a first for NSW, and an added bonus is that it’s free to the community with no tip fees attached.
It is so important that we all do our bit when it comes to waste management. Only a quarter of the waste placed in red bins is in the right place – that means 75% of our waste could have been diverted from landfill. As red bin waste costs twice as much to process than yellow or green bin waste, it can make a huge difference if we are careful about where we dispose of unwanted waste.
Landfill is costly, and every year the waste levy Council must pay to the NSW Government for every tonne of landfill continues to increase significantly.
By being smarter about how we dispose of our household and business waste, we not only save the environment but it will help save our community paying unnecessary waste levy charges which could be better spent elsewhere in the community.
Council’s Facebook will post recycling tips daily this week, and throughout the year visit Council’s website: www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au for all you need to know about wiser waste disposal.
This is one area we can all make a difference to save money and the environment now and into the future.
