Orange Sky Laundry gives the homeless free access to washing machines and dryers while encouraging conversation and community connections.
Erin Denham is spearheading the Mid North Coast fundraising, under the banner of Make a Difference Community, with the authority to collect the funds on behalf of Orange Sky Laundry.
The target is $100,000.
That will cover the van, generator, washing machines and insurance.
The Mid North Coast Orange Sky Laundry van will provide a mobile laundry service for the homeless from Taree to Kempsey.
Preparations are underway to launch the Mid North Coast fundraising push into the business and corporate sector.
Mrs Denham said the Mid North Coast service would mean more than clean clothes for the homeless.
“In the long-term, we hope it builds a network and bridges the gap between the homeless and the rest of the community to be a platform into gaining jobs, helping people go into low cost housing situations and transitioning hopefully out of the cycle of living on the streets,” she said.
The Catholic Men’s Club, Heritage Christian School, St Columba Anglican School, Newman Senior Technical College, St Joseph’s Primary School at Laurieton, St Joseph’s Primary School at Wauchope and MacKillop College have backed the fundraising campaign.
Orange Sky Laundry is the world's first free mobile laundry service for the homeless. A crazy idea in 2014 to put two washing machines and two dryers in a van and wash and dry clothes for free. Starting in the streets of Brisbane, Orange Sky has grown to 10 services across Australia in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney, Sunshine Coast, Canberra, Perth, Adelaide, SE Melbourne and Hobart. Orange Sky Laundry now does over 6.9 tonnes of laundry every week.
