We want everyone to enjoy our beautiful beaches but please stay safe by swimming between the flags, and try to keep an eye out for visitors who may not be as familiar with our surf conditions.
Along with council lifeguards, we appreciate the efforts of surf club members who volunteer their time to patrol our beaches over the summer months.
Launched in December, council’s Summer Smarts campaign has five practical tips so we can all play our part in keeping our beaches and reserves safe and fun places for everyone to enjoy.
When out and about on our beaches, parks and recreational reserves stay Summer Smart by swimming between the flags; having a permit to drive on the beach; observing parking and safety signs; disposing of rubbish and respecting public facilities.
This time of year is a busy time on our roads as well as our beaches. Whether you are staying at home or travelling far, please drive safely and take care with the increased number of vehicles on the roads around our towns.
Take extra care in busy shopping centres and recreational areas with the influx of visitors and children out and about.
For any of us travelling further afield, it is important to leave plenty of time for your journey and to "Stop, Revive, Survive" along the way.
Australia Day celebrations
Everyone is welcome to join in the Australia Day celebrations being held this week. The official Awards Ceremony is at the Slim Dusty Centre on Australia Day eve, with local Lions Clubs hosting events in South West Rocks and Crescent Head on Thursday.
I look forward to joining you at our local Australia Day functions where we celebrate our nation, and especially our valley – the wonderful place in Australia we call home.
