Council has led the push to have CCTV cameras installed in key locations in the Kempsey CBD, including the Clyde Street Mall in late 2015.
We have worked closely with local police, business owners, community groups, Federal and State Government to look at the safety issues in our area, and to agree the most appropriate locations for this vital monitoring equipment.
Our CCTV program is now set to expand with NSW Government grant funding received in December. This funding will extend the CCTV coverage throughout the Kempsey CBD, South West Rocks and Crescent Head over the coming months with the main focus on business and retail zones. The program also includes Riverside Park which is increasingly used for recreation and events.
The CCTV program aims to reduce the incidence of anti-social behaviour in busy commercial areas, and helps promote our popular coastal villages at South West Rocks and Crescent Head as safe communities for locals and visitors alike. A proven crime deterrent, the existing CCTV coverage has assisted police in their efforts to make our community safer.
Australia Day Awards
The one message I hope we all took from our Australia Day celebrations last week is that we take inspiration from the efforts of those in our Shire who go above and beyond to make our community a better place to live.
Congratulations to all nominees and the winners of the four award categories: Citizen of the Year – Sonya Murphy; Young Citizen of the Year – Drew Walsh; and Community Group of the Year –Riding for the Disabled; and Volunteer of the Year – Frank Oakes.
Thank you to the local Lions Club members who hosted fabulous Australia Day celebrations in Crescent Head and South West Rocks last Thursday. It was great to see the community support this special day in our national calendar.
