Fiona has worked as a rural midwife for many years and is a clinical midwifery educator and a mentor to midwifery students.
She has sold more than two million books worldwide in 12 languages.
She has been nominated for Romantic Book of the Year with the Romance Writers of Australia and the US-based CataRomance Readers’ Choice Award.
Her new book follows the life of Tess Daley who takes on a position as a Breast Care Nurse with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Mica Ridge.
Station owner Soretta Byrnes welcomes Tess and new pilot Charlie Fennes to her property when they arrive in town, looking for somewhere to stay.
As they share life’s triumphs and challenges, it isn't long before everyone at the station feels like family.
But Charlie has yet to reveal his motive for coming to Mica Ridge and his secret will change the life of someone in the house forever.
Heart of the Sky reveals the stoicism of Australia’s outback women, disadvantaged by distance to medical facilities but not immune to disease.
Fiona says the book “shines a light” on the integral role that the Royal Flying Doctors Service plays in outback Australia.
“Even though I already understood some of the medical aspects as a nurse and midwife, and having lived through it with my mother’s illness, I wanted Heart of the Sky to highlight some of the extra challenges rural and remote cancer sufferers have to deal with and how they and their families rise to the challenge,” she said.
Fiona will speak about the book at Kempsey Library on Thursday, February 23 at 5pm.
Copies of Heart of the Sky will be available to purchase at the talk. Light refreshments will be provided.
