There were 58 people from the region honoured, including three from the Macleay Valley who received national medals and it was also the ribbon-cutting for the completed upgrade of the Fire Control Centre.
Zone Manager for the Lower North Coast, Superintendent Lachlann Ison, said the $800,000 rebuild of the Fire Control Centre gave the zone a modern operations area and a brand new training space.
“The new facilities are excellent and since opening they have been used through two major fire events… they performed well and only fine-tuning is required,” Supt Ison said.
“The main operations room has been named after TJ (RFS legend Tony Jarrett who passed recently) – he was always the operations manager, it was his major role … this gesture recognises him as a fellow staff member and friend to many.”
NSW RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons was at the event to hand out the medals, which honoured a total of 1322 years of service throughout the region, 692 from Kempsey.
