The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has approved a temporary waste levy exemption for council, meaning that affected residents can dispose of waste free of charge at council’s Waste Management Centre on Crescent Head Rd, South Kempsey, until March 31.
The following materials will be accepted: building rubble such as brick, concrete, asphalt and timber as well as carpets and furniture.
Council’s coordinator of Civic Services, Steve Pellen, said it is a simple measure that allows council to alleviate some of the stress for residents.
“It’s a hard time already for residents without having to think about paying to dispose of waste caused by something out of their control so it’s great news that the EPA is working with council to assist local families with their clean-up efforts,” Mr Pellen said.
It is important, however, that residents call council before going to the Waste Management Centre.
“Residents need to call and book in a time and day to drop off the waste so that council can provide them with a unique code,” Mr Pellen said.
Affected residents, who would like to dispose of fire damaged waste, should call 6566-3200.
Meanwhile, eligible primary producers affected by the recent devastating bush fires can now apply for assistance under the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
The assistance has been activated for the Kempsey, Mid Coast, Mid-Western Regional, Narrabri, Port Macquarie-Hastings, Upper Hunter, Queanbeyan-Palerang and Warrumbungle local government areas.
To apply for a concessional loan or freight subsidy, contact the NSW Rural Assistance Authority on 1800 678-593 or visit www.raa.nsw.gov.au. Primary producers needing assistance with emergency fodder, livestock assessment or emergency water should call 1800 814-647.
