South West Rocks Surf Life Saving Club’s Rod McDonagh, was presented with the prestigious award of Life Membership of Surf Life Saving New South Wales. Rod was joined at the SLSNSW State Championships at Swansea-Belmont by fellow SLSNSW Life Members and SWRSLSC’s Life Governors Tony Hayes OAM and Bruce Caldwell.

Rod’s distinguished career in Surf Life Saving began when he joined Cape Hawke SLSC in 1979. After obtaining his Bronze Medallion in 1981 he served continuously at his club in many positions including Club Captain and Competition Captain.

Rod’s career took him further north but he wasn’t lost to Surf Life Saving, becoming a member of the South West Rocks SLSC. He enthusiastically embraced his new club and was elected as President in 1997 and still holds this position 20 years on.

“Rod’s involvement, drive and knowledge has proved to be a milestone in the development of the club. He was the youngest elected president and is also is the longest serving president” said Tony Hayes OAM.

“Surf Life Saving has been an important part of my life and I am very humbled to be awarded Life Membership of SLSNSW,” Mr McDonagh said.

“The Surf Life Saving movement is one big family and my involvement over the years has enabled me to develop longstanding friendships.”

The Surf Life Saving Mid North Coast Branch has also had the privilege of Rod’s vast knowledge and passion for Surf Life Saving and in 2011 he was elected as the Branch President. His dedication to all Mid North Coast Clubs and his willingness to engage with all stakeholders has made him a valued member of the community.

In the past two years Rod has continued to drive the very successful NSW Stramit Country Championships in his role as Chair of the Organising Committee.

“South West Rocks has had a very busy season hosting a round of the North Coast Surf Boat Series as well as the NSW Stramit Country Championships, with the SLSNSW IRB Championship Round to be held on the first weekend of July. These events put SWR on the map and show true club and community spirit.”
