This year’s theme, ‘Get involved, be heard, make a difference!’ encourages young people to express themselves in words and actions about things that affect them. It is also about having some fun while raising awareness of important issues that affect their lives.
A great day is planned for our youth to enjoy on April 6 at Verge Street Oval, including the chance to check out career and education opportunities.
Council has partnered with some of our local schools and businesses to create a temporary art display, ‘Face Future, Future Face’ that will showcase local students creative talents in large posters that will be on display around town over the coming weeks.
After the inspiring speech our 2017 Australia Day Ambassador, Nic Newling, gave about mental health issues young people can experience, it’s timely that Melville High School is hosting a Parent Information Night on March 28. This session is geared towards helping parents and guardians support their children facing grief and loss, and provides practical tips on how to talk about mental health.
Another youth week event is the annual National Youth Homelessness Matters Day sponsored by youth support services, such as YP Space. The whole community is welcome to participate and join in on the day to be held at Kempsey Service Clubs Park on April 5.
This day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the problems our youth face relating to homelessness, and to highlight how important education and employment are if our young people are to be given the chance to live independent, fulfilled lives.
If we understand the causes of youth homelessness and mental health problems, and how vital education and employment are in providing a brighter future for our kids, then we are in a better position to support them and they will know they are not alone.
