“Of course we will be (impacted by the closure),” Jeni Thompson, owner of the Hat Head General Store, told the Argus. “A lot of holiday makers come here so they can go fish off the beach. Without the access, they’ll go to South West Rocks instead.”
The beach access ramp has been closed due to extensive erosion caused by recent high tides and storms.
“It’s not good,” Jeni said,
“It’s a very important weekend for us, it’s like Christmas – it’s what holds us over for the rest of the year.
“It dies right down after this weekend.”
With more swimmers using the beach near the creek outlet during holidays, 4WD access is also not available from the boat ramp.
Kempsey Council said they will assess options for repairs or alternative access once the erosion at the site stabilises. Until then, vehicle owners are being urged to comply with the closures.
