THE GRILL plates were scraped and back as they were, while organisers of the Loaves and Fishes BBQ swapped spatulas for plastic cups of ice cold beer and reflected on the seventh and biggest yet annual event at South West Rocks today.

Basically the only reason we keep this going is because the town enjoys it
- Dave Mitchell
The fundraiser for the local Surf Life Saving Club had, as its name suggests, biblical irony on a picture perfect Good Friday.
“We had 800 fillets of sea mullet and we served the last piece to the last person in the line,” said a relieved Dave Mitchell from the South West Rocks beach haul fishing crew.
Dave, and Michael Wooden from Oceanwatch Australia, surmised it was a record crowd.
“It’s been bigger than last year, and last year was the biggest,” Dave said.
Michael: “One person said there’s easily been more than a thousand people here.”
“These last few weeks it’s been horrible overcast weather but today it’s been just brilliant so the gods are looking down on us.
“It’s all about showing people the value of local fish from a sustainable fishery and I reckon everyone has been deadset enjoying themselves.”
While the barbecued sea mullet sangers were free, donations were encouraged with the proceeds supporting The Rocks surf club.
“Basically the only reason we keep this going is because the town enjoys it,” Dave said.
Entertainment was by The Bennett Brothers (aka Ghost Road boys) from Bonny Hills, and their slick mix of power and strident harmonica had the punters near and in the adjacent park twiggling their toes.
