A nearby resident said there had been multiple smaller “bangs” before a much louder explosion at about 9.20pm.
She said the explosion caused the pots and pans in her kitchen to rattle.
“The explosion was just incredible, I flew out of bed when I heard it,” she said.
“It was a massive noise.”
Residents in West Kempsey and Aldavilla also reported hearing the explosion.
Kempsey police said that they were attempting to make contact with the registered owner of the car to determine if the vehicle had been stolen.
At the time of print, police said they were unsure of the circumstances surrounding the car fire. Police, who attended the scene with Kempsey Fire and Rescue, confirmed that the vehicle was found abandoned.
