You know, the sport of golf is - or can be - a funny game and the event staged by the Kempsey Veterans Golf Club last week did little to cull some confusion.

So to speak, the 4BBB Stableford that spells out to be a Fourball Better Ball, is a team event played by just two persons (politically correct).
A simple stableford it was, so not the lowest, but the highest score each hole was to be the winner.
And talking of winners, the best from the 40 starters were none other than Steve Cameron and Peter Hatton.
They virtually were atop the list by the proverbial mile - actually with 43 points they were four clear of their closest rival(s).
It can be revealed that the "newcomer" (not really) from down there in Lake Cathie, along with his recently (last year) retired Doctor of Medicine, did have every reason to be sporting widening smiles.
After all, why wouldn't Steve and Peter (ie respectively), for averaging a fraction over three points per hole is really out of the ordinary in any stableford competition.
Steve cracked a funny one whilst being interviewed, after all it was the talk of the gathering that he had opened his round with three succesive 4-pointers.
"I am trying to see if I am a golfer," he quipped. "I'll see what happens at year's end." But that's a long way off.
Oh!, almost forgot, this same man - Peter's partner - managed a 5-pointer at the 17th hole.
Now, that word funny comes to the fore again, for Steve will - at the most - have a deduction of one stroke courtesy of our handicapper. He could be in the 20's today!
'Tis funny that neither Steve nor Peter (he's a 10 marker) failed to figure in the individual side to the event which was taken out by Wayne Simmons with 33 points.
More fun, too, for "Birdseed" - he was a West Kempsey Pet Shop businessman hence the nickname - is a veteran ever so keen to better his current 16 handicap.
Most of us are happy where they are and wanting for one or two strokes back now and then.
Not "Birdseed", no!
Our ageing-well Johnny King (he's near 86 you know) topped the B-grade lesserlights on 32 points and this Hat Head celebrity would agree on the funny side of golfing, oh yes!
Simmons, with Marinus Tapper alongside, led the ball competition on 39 points with Terry Smith and Max Gleeson two points back.
On 36 points were Dennis O'Brien and Robert Dykes and Peter Campling and Neil Dodds.
Nearest the pin at the third hole were Robert Johnston (A) and Stuart Aston (B), whilst the Hatton-Cameron team featured at the 11th hole.
Chip-ins were part of Johnston and Aston's rounds.
Captain Robert (Dykes) gave notice of today's Anzac Day 2-person Ambrose and that an earlier 8.30am tee-off would apply.
