Bowraville opened the scoring to take an early 5-0 lead but new flyhalf Ethan Dowling crossed and Eric Kerr kicked a penalty goal to give the Cannonballs a 10-5 lead at the break.
Bowraville answered to take a 12-10 lead and the scores remained the same until the final 10 minutes of the match.
Gibson Burke scored under the posts to give his side a 17-12 lead before Kerr iced the match with a penalty.
Inside centre Jordan Burn was credited with man of the match honours.
First grade coach Jared Fuller said the forward pack had a strong match.
“The scrum was really dominant and it has been an area Lance has worked hard on,” Fuller said.
“The boys fitness held up as well.
“It was a bit of a scrappy performance but that is to be expected in their first match.”
First grade had a bye for the opening round.
The two sides will travel to Coffs Harbour for their second round clash on Saturday May 6.
The competition will have a week break this weekend, with the Mid North Coast Axemen to compete at the NSW Country Championships in Port macquarie.
