First grade coach Matt Baker was happy with the outcome.
"We got what we wanted out of the match, we earned the three competition points and with the bye next weekend we will enter round 3 on six points,” Baker said.
Saints found the back of the net early through Lachlan Jay.
The left fullback pushed up the field and pounced on a loose ball inside the 18-yard box.
A bit of luck went their way for their second, as a free kick from Troy Ward took a deflection off a defender and wrong footed the keeper.
The Saints were tiring heading into halftime and they were almost made to pay.
“Our fitness was definitely lacking, it isn’t where it should be” Baker said.
“We had created enough chances that we should have been up by three or more and the match sealed.
“Those missed chances almost cost us as they had chances that they should have converted.”
The break revitalised the side as they came out in the second period applying a lot of pressure to Port United.
Neither side was able to trouble the scoring in the second half.
“We still created a lot of chances and our lack of fitness led to the misses,” Baker said.
“It was a real team effort and there was no weak links within our structure.”
Baker said he was happy to keep Port United scoreless and believes his defence will be hard to crack.
“We showed we defend as a unit and it starts with the front men,” he said.
Right fullback Harry Jones was awarded the player’s player.
Kempsey Saints reserve grade side earned a 3-1 victory over Port United.
Caleb Foran and Mitch Clarke put their names on the scorer’s sheet in the first half while Liam King completed the scoring in the second half.
It was a performance coach Kevin Sinclair was extremely pleased with.
“They played the style of football we have been practicing at training and what the club as a whole aims to play,” Sinclair said.
“There were lapses but it is a good start.”
The side put a lot of pressure on Port United and they never looked like falling behind.
The oldest player Tom Salter was voted player’s player.
The Kempsey Saints will enjoy an early bye this Saturday, and they will host a coaching clinic on Sunday.
“It is the biggest single day coaching event we have held as a club,” Baker said.
It is aimed at juniors and seniors.
The coaching day will kick off at 10am and will run until 6pm.
