Co-coach Zac McKiernan credits the victory to Bo Wilson, who converted all of his attempts at goal and was honoured player’s player.
“It would have been a different story if Bo had an off day,” McKiernan said.
It was a hard fought 36-30 victory for the side that trailed for the majority of the match.
The Dragons were successful with only one of their conversions, which ultimately proved their downfall.
“It is great to start the season with a victory and see the boys dig deep,” McKiernan said.
“Jack Walsh-McKiernan was dangerous in attack from fullback in his debut for the club and he played extremely well for only 16.”
The Magpies face the Comboyne Tigers this Saturday and McKiernan is expecting to be more competitive than their 32-8 loss in the Bain Cup semi-final with all of their players back on deck.
