I was proud to continue the tradition of launching the Salvation Army's annual Red Shield Appeal by raising the flag at Council's offices in support of the fantastic work the Salvos do helping people in need. A big thank you to all the volunteers who were out collecting for this year's appeal, and to everyone who generously donated to help a great cause.
The Reconciliation Week community barbeque held at Riverside Park last Wednesday was a wonderful way for the community to come together to build relationships based on respect and cultural understanding. In this way, we strengthen harmony and goodwill within our community.
Thank you to West Kempsey Public School for hosting the Kempsey leg of the torch relay for the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run from Brisbane to Adelaide. It was so uplifting to be part of an initiative that promotes peace and harmony for all, and to see the students involved on the day by planting a tree to remind us how important it is to be kind to one another.
Last weekend Kempsey High School hosted 20 schools taking part in this year's Model United Nations Assembly, a program run by Rotary to educate senior high school students on the United Nations and its commitment to world peace and improving living standards around the globe. Along with students from the Mid North Coast, we welcomed students from as far afield as Armidale, Coonabarabran, Gunnedah, Tamworth, Inverell, and Quirindi.
The program provides a fantastic forum for students to develop their public speaking skills while debating a case for the country they represent on topical world issues. Not only was the weekend informative and fun, but it helped young people to learn more about the world we live in and how they can contribute to making our community – and world – a better place to live.
