Kempsey Shire Council stated that the program, which will use carrots baited with the RHD5 virus, will take place in late June and early July at Frederickton’s Cyrus Saul Circuit.
Council stated that work to destroy warrens and remove lantana and other invasive weeds from the site will take place about three months after the virus release.
A preventative vaccine has been shown to be effective against the RHD5 virus, and domestic rabbit owners should contact their vet to ensure their rabbits are vaccinated against the disease.
The baiting program will be carried out by Bernard Whitehead, an environmental consultant from Saltair Flora and Fauna.
