Transplant recipient Khyleah Magnus has thrown her support behind an awareness raising motorcycle ride.
Cowper MP Luke Hartsuyker organised the ride to coincide with DonateLife Week.
Khyleah said the awareness raising initiative for organ donor registration was a terrific idea.
The mother-of-three is enjoying life and back in the workforce after a kidney and pancreas transplant in 2014.
“I’m living life, I’m enjoying time with my kids and my partner,” she said.
“Everything is just wonderful again.”
Mr Hartsuyker believes Khyleah’s story sums up why organ donor registration is vitally important.
“The obstacles that Khyleah and her partner Colin have had to overcome are phenomenal and her story epitomises why I’m raising awareness for organ donor registration with a motorcycle ride in DonateLife Week,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
The August 5 ride from Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie will shine the light on the importance of organ donor registration.
About 1400 Australians are waiting for a transplant at any one time.
Mr Hartsuyker said one in three Australians are registered organ donors, and only eight per cent of people aged between 18 and 24.
He encouraged people to start a family discussion about organ donation.
Families that know each other’s donation decisions are more likely to uphold them.
In 2016, 88 per cent of families agreed to donation proceeding where their family member was a registered donor.
People can register their donation decision online at the Australian Organ Donor Register website at www.donorregister.gov.au
Khyleah said organ donation changed so many people’s lives.
“It’s a hard decision to make for the people and for the people’s families but it’s one that I think has a lot a reward at the end of the day,” she said.
Khyleah’s partner Colin Glover urged people to consider the lives that could be saved through organ donation.
