The facility will offer individual training and classes on a set timetable.
At its ordinary meeting on Tuesday, Kempsey Shire Council granted consent to the development application filed by Jebriana Pty Ltd.
Council’s report predicted a positive social impact with the new gym providing options for local residents to increase their fitness and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Council also expects to see more activity on Smith Street with increased business options for local customers and employment opportunities.
There could also be a temporary economic benefit during construction with the possibility of jobs for local workers.
The location is zoned B3 Commercial Core whereby a “Recreational Facility (Indoor)” is permissible.
The planned structure has a maximum height of 6.8m and satisfies all of the building, environmental, traffic and parking requirements.
The carpark is at the front of the development, with good visibility to the street and no spaces concealed.
There is a clear defined path from the main door of the building to the carpark and the spaces.
The proposed gym is situated to the eastern portion, which is affected by the Kempsey Central Business District Floodway, but it was found to fulfill the relevant regulations.
Inside the building, the office and reception is immediately adjacent to the main door and the bathrooms, which provides guardianship of the building for its patrons and limits intruder penetration.
The main gym area will be a large open room, with good visibility throughout.
