Cleo Schubert completed a personal best time on the way to finishing in third place at the NSW All Schools Cross Country State Final last Friday.
The year three student at South West Rocks Public School competed in the Under eight and nine age group and finished with a time of eight minutes and 22 seconds, seven seconds behind the first place finisher and two seconds behind second place.
Cleo was in a state of shock after winning a bronze medal in the 2km race and was ecstatic with her result.
“I couldn’t believe I actually won a state medal, I was so happy and glad my family were there to watch me,” Cleo said.
"I was so nervous and freezing to begin with, I just went out as fast as I could at the start of the race and was leading for a little bit then when I was getting tired, all I was thinking was I had to hang on and stay in the top group.”
The age group had 80 competitors in total and Cleo entered the race as the North Coast champion after winning the carnival held at Murwillumbah on June 9.
It marks the third individual state medal a representative from South West Rocks Public School has won at cross country.
The age group doesn’t progress to a national competition but Cleo is certain to compete at an Australian level in the future.
South West Rocks Public School Principal Cliff Peachman was proud of Cleo’s and Ruby Trappel and Natalie Van Driest achievements, who also competed at the state carnival.
“It is a very tough competition at state level and we are proud of all three of their efforts, they all completed the course in personal best times” Peachman said.
“It is awesome for Cleo to win the bronze medal. She just enjoys being active, competing and is very focused on being at her best.”
Ruby finished 44th in the Under 11 age group while Natalie finished 66th in the Under eight and nine division.
