Schools Tree Day marks the beginning of a long-term environmental program for school children, engaging them in a fun, hands on activity that reinforces their environmental, maths, science and creative arts learning while also contributing to creating beautiful school grounds.
Council’s Coordinator of Civic Services, Steve Pellen, said more than 30 local schools will be supplied with either a citrus fruit tree, trees native to the Macleay Valley or a mixture of vegetable seedlings to take part in the event.
“These plants are being supplied by local businesses such as The Valley Garden Centre, Gone Native and Bunnings Warehouse, Kempsey,” Mr Pellen said.
“The trees and vegetables to be planted provide healthy food choices for students, environmental benefits as well as creating habitats for birds and animals.
“Council is happy to support causes like this that provide students the opportunity to participate and help to beautify our valley.”
Council is also encouraging the community to take part in National Tree Day on Sunday, July 30.
