The bushfires in February that destroyed a home, damaged land and outbuildings in Dondingalong, were a harsh reminder of the danger that bushfires bring to the Macleay.
They also showed the fantastic contribution of our local Rural Fire Service (RFS) personnel and volunteers keeping us safe, and the time and effort involved to train, prepare for and fight fires across our Shire.
For the Kempsey Shire, the bushfire danger period starts on September 1, and during this time a Fire Permit is required for burning activities. The permit system means agencies like the RFS know where and when landholders intend to burn to ensure adequate protection is in place so that fires remain under control.
It is important every resident and property owner does all they can to assist our RFS and Emergency Service crews by being prepared and ready to respond should we experience more bushfires this summer.
The RFS website rfs.nsw.gov.au is a great source of information on how to prepare your home and property to minimise the risk of bushfires, and what to do if bushfires are threatening your property, including who to contact in an emergency.
A simple action we can take to assist Emergency Services respond to calls for help is to make sure our homes, businesses and rural properties are clearly marked with an accurate property address. Council’s customer service team can assist you to identify your correct property address on 6566 3200.
Stay vigilant by being aware of the dangers, listening to local media reports and weather warnings, keeping an eye on your neighbours, and following the advice of experts.
It is key to aiding the RFS and Emergency Services when bushfires strike.
Take care of each other and stay safe this summer.
