The new cameras are part of Council’s Macleay Valley CCTV Project.
Security System company Secdata Pty Ltd was awarded the tender for the supply, installation and maintenance of the cameras at the July Council meeting.
Council’s Project Officer - Community Safety, Marilyn Breen, said Secdata began the installation of 16 cameras in Smith and Belgrave streets this week.
“Council has liaised with building owners and business operators in the Kempsey CBD who have all agreed to support the program and allow installation to occur,” she said.
“It is estimated that the installation will take approximately three weeks.”
Ms Breen said Council has also consulted with business owners and operators in South West Rocks for the installation of 10 cameras, scheduled to commence by the end of September.
“The next part of the project will see Council consult with business owners in Crescent Head for the installation of eight cameras,” she said.
“The final stage will be the installation of two cameras along the lane running next to Kempsey Central as well as two cameras in Riverside Park near the playground and shelter. It is anticipated that this will occur in November.”
The project is funded by a grant from the NSW Community Safety Fund, administered by the NSW Department of Justice. It has gained support from the Macleay Valley Business Chamber who worked closely with Council on the grant application.
Gary Scott, President of the Chamber, said the project adds another layer of security to local businesses.
“By having more cameras in our retail areas it will help to confirm that our shopping districts are welcoming and safe for both locals and visitors to the region,” Mr Scott said.
