WITH show time just around the corner more of our readers have shared their treasured historic photos of the Kempsey Show in years gone by.
Local historian Phil Lee has located a number of priceless images captured by his grandfather of the cattle judging in the late 1940s.
Phil’s grandfather was A W ‘Billy’ Lee (1879-1955). He came to Kempsey from Goulburn with his family in 1888. He was a builder and built the family home at Greenhill around 1910 which still stands today.
“He built houses, farm sheds, cow bails and cream sheds up to around 1940, after which he found employment with Kempsey Municipal Council in parks and gardens department,” recalls Phil.
Billy married Nora Wilson of Mooneba in 1912 and they raised ten children at Greenhill. He was a keen amateur photographer and left behind many photos and negatives of family, friends, his own buildings and other subjects – most taken with a box brownie.
