The Rangers controlled the possession and created all the opportunities in the opening half but they only found the back of the net once.
Jeremy Masters gave the Rangers the lead with a tap in after Tyler Wyatt headed the ball to his feet.
Campbell Tyson should have extended their lead prior to the break.
He assumed he was offside and only attempted a shot after his teammates screamed “shoot”.
His shot went wide of the goal and he held back tears at half-time.
However, Tyson would later become the hero.
Rangers continued to press early in the second half but they began to lose their way and United fought their way into the contest.
Their pressure lead to an equaliser as a goal was awarded after a scramble in the box.
The Rangers didn’t panic and they reinstated their lead five-minutes later.
Jeremy Masters headed the ball towards goal and Tyson was on the end of it to divert it from the keeper.
The Rangers sat back and defended well to retain their lead as they ended Port United’s season.
Rangers will face the losing side of the grand final qualifier between Kempsey Saints and the Forster-Tuncurry Tigers in the preliminary final next week.
