Last week St Joseph’s College in Kempsey held its ‘War on waste’ exhibition.
The exhibition officially opened on Tuesday, September 5 with the school’s Enviro Team performing It’s up to us, a song writtten by Mr Zvirzdinas.
Each class came up with their own way to contribute to the overall display.
For example, year 3T’s project explored whether there is a better way to buy what you want and encouraged the kids to consider which packaging is more environmentally friendly.
Year 3T teacher Michelle Tarrant said the school has had an environmental team for more than 15 years.
“We try to do something different each year,” Mrs Tarrant said.
“So this year we’ve based the program around the ABC television series War on waste, which captured the imaginations of the students and started meaningful discussions within both the school and wider communities.”
Two initiatives that the children have implemented at the school are ‘Take Home Tuesday’, which involves the children taking home their rubbish and, ‘Waste Free Wednesday”, where those children who have zero waste in their lunch box, go into a draw to win prizes.
The school has already seen a huge impact on the amount of rubbish collected daily at school as a result of these initiatives.
