Today, Kempsey residents may not light, maintain or use a fire in the open or carry out any activity in the open that is likely to cause a fire.
All fire permits are suspended and no general purpose hot works such as welding or gas cutting can be done in the open.
Gas and electric barbecues may be used provided certain conditions are met.
The fire danger rating for Kempsey today is ‘severe’ as temperatures reach around 33 degrees and dry, windy weather conditions prove dangerous.
The fire danger period commenced this month.
Authorities expect the season will be similar to the last one where fires devastated local towns including Dondingalong, Kempsey, Pappinbarra and Stuarts Point.
Locals are being encouraged to participate in the Get Ready events being held this weekend on September 16 and 17 at local fire brigades.
