Yes, our regular burger barons of a Tuesday proved their worth other than in-the-kitchen duties with a par round that stood the test from 19 challenging pairings.
Graheme, who just happens to be the reigning Club Champion and being the lowest handicapper, should have been the dominant player. But not so according to the secret service.
For John, who plays second fiddle to his partner whilst on kitchen duty, was truly on the ball (so to speak) when that something extra was required. An eagle is rumoured!
Their 6.50 under 49.50 nett registered early in proceedings was challenged, but half a shot is as good as a mile in an Ambrose, or any golf event for that matter.
Bad luck, oh yes, for low marker Alan Macdonald and Phil Pinney who really blew it by bogeying the final (18th) hole. Both our president and his B-grade partner overshot the green from 100 metres out.
And a couple of missed putts from short distance by Trevor Hannam and Mark Townsend during their round for a 50.75 nett proved rather costly, too. But third place is something to boast about, eh!
Of course there plenty of other hard luck claims and there always will be as far as Ambrose events are concerned. Fun and frivolity is assured!
Then next Tuesday sees the annual President v Captain Teams Day and just how the two sides will be formulated is yet to be announced. Rumours are strong that prizemoney has been increased.
VALE: REG HUDSON
On behalf of all members of the Kempsey Veterans Golf Club deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Reg Hudson, who passed away last week after a lengthy illness.
Reg is remembered as a truly popular friend of all during his playing days and beyond those many years in which he did spend exciting everyone around him both on and off the golf course(s).
He was a very capable golfer, also a cricketer of real note and to put it simply “a great mate to have around.” Willawarrin was his home, yes, for many, many a year.
The huge gathering at Walkers Crematorium and Memorial Gardens in Frederickton on last Friday was certainly a farewell of farewells.
“May God Bless.”
