Friends of Kempsey Pound is one of the local rehoming organisations that actively works with Council rangers to rehome many dogs and cats that may be impounded.
In just 2017 alone, Friends of Kempsey Pound has managed to connect 300 unclaimed dogs and cats, either privately surrendered or from the Kempsey Pound, to rescue centres.
“If an animal has not been adopted at the pound, our volunteers will take the animal out and place it with a temporary carer while we contact rescue organisations that can take the animal on,” volunteer Marion Crowley said.
“Transport is then organised either with volunteers or on commercial animal transport to the rescue centre. Animals who are taken to rescue centres then have very high chances of being adopted.”
The Kempsey Pound, located at Frederickton, is managed by Kempsey Shire Council and is provided as a service to residents in the Local Government Area for lost cats and dogs.
In accordance with the Companion Animal Act, the pound keeps lost animals protected until their owner can be found. If, however, the owner cannot be found, the pound offers adoption of unclaimed animals to the general public.
Unclaimed animals, that are unable to be adopted locally, are taken by not-for-profit charitable rehoming organisations.
Rehoming organisations generally rely on donations and are staffed by a small team of dedicated volunteers who work closely with Council rangers towards a common goal of providing welfare and rehoming opportunities for unclaimed dogs and cats within the shire.
Council rangers praised the work of the volunteers and stressed the importance of having pets de-sexed and microchipped as well a collar with a clear name tag with contact details so that they can be reunited with their owner if they become lost.
