The redevelopment of the West Kempsey Park, on the corner of Cochrane and Leith streets, is progressing well with stage one recently completed.
Kempsey Shire Council has partnered with community organisations such as Burrun Dalai Corporation, Australian Red Cross, Macleay Options and Ability Links, to help develop what was once an underutilised reserve area.
Council has also actively engaged students from the Macleay Vocational College, Clontarf Academy, and Girls Academy, as well as local residents and nearby mother’s groups, who have all provided positive ideas and assistance. While council owns the land, the work has been made possible due to grant funding received from NSW Family and Community Services to provide a safe public playground for young children.
The council representatives leading the project are project officer community safety Marilyn Breen and project officer Mark Jackson. “Stage one of the West Kempsey Park Project began in October and involved the installation of a new concrete bike track around the park and the preliminary installation of some of the children’s play equipment,” Ms Breen said.
“With stage one now successfully complete, it is expected that stage two will commence in a few weeks’ time, weather permitting, and will see the installation of a barbecue, picnic table and park benches.” Ms Breen said council appreciates the cooperation and patience of local residents while the redevelopment work takes place.
“After the opening of the Riverside Park and the Horseshoe Bay playgrounds, it is clear that locals and visitors appreciate and enjoy upgraded outdoor facilities. It will be great to have a new park area in West Kempsey that will be welcoming, safe and easily accessible,” she said.
It is hoped the park will be finished and open in time for the upcoming school holidays.
