Moving along the newly grown mangroves one can observe how the flow of tidal saltwater has resulted in a healthy fish breeding habitat, not least for the benefit of numerous fish-eating birds.
The paddle will go from The Golden Hole launch area to the top of the tidal extent of the Yarrahapinni Wetlands National Park and return the same way.
Starting through the ‘Broadwater’, winding up the narrowing Borigalla/Barraganyatti Creek, past the old ‘Scalds’ area and up to the Whalan’s Bridge Area the distance is about 5.5km and will take 1.5 to 2 hours each way.
During the one hour lunch break there is an opportunity to hear brief talks about the Yarrahapinni Wetlands' history and the plans for further wetlands restorations in the Lower Macleay.
Participants need to bring their canoe, food and water for an informative, enjoyable day in this little known area of the Macleay Valley.
The paddle will be launching at the Golden Hole, 10km south of Stuarts Point at 11.30am. Registration starts at 10.30 with a fee of $5.00 per person.
