In conjunction with volunteer surf club members, council lifeguards will be patrolling the beaches during the school holidays.
Lifeguards will patrol beaches at Grassy Head and Horseshoe Bay at South West Rocks from Monday December 24 to Monday January 28 from 9am until 5pm, seven days a week.
Patrols at South West Rocks main beach, Hat Head and Crescent Head main beach also began on Monday December 24 from 9am until 5pm on weekdays, concluding on Friday January 25.
Council’s Director of Operations and Planning, Robert Fish, stressed the important of swimming between the flags when visiting local beaches.
“We encourage residents and visitors to enjoy the Macleay Valley’s beautiful waterways by swimming safely at a patrolled beach,” Mr Fish said.
“As well as swimming within the red and yellow flags, beachgoers should also take notice of any signs on or around the beach for their own safety.”
Council also operates four swimming pools in Kempsey, South West Rocks, Gladstone and Crescent Head.
