"Some days are diamonds, some days are stones"...meaningful words of a great song and ones that could well be used as an insight into last week's Kempsey Veterans Golf Club opening event of their new year 2019 program.

Yes, no fewer than 35 older-than-55 members rolled up after the festive season to contest a 14-hole stroke that boasted the January Monthly Medal, which again has the sponsorship of the Kempsey Heights Bowling Club.
A really serious competition, yes indeed, and one that glistened (so to speak) for respective A, B and C-graders Allan Heather, Graham Hall and Peter Mercer.
Allan, a Grassy Heads fruit grower, did mine out a 7-under par 49 nett to brighten his day - prove his worth - and show exactly what he's made of as a golfer. Most probably his best round for many a day eh!
And for Graham he did continue on his successes and there's no arguing about this Stuarts Point resident being the Club's most consistent of players. His 51 nett tells the tale.
To describe Peter's performance we turn off Johnny Denver for awhile - switch onto Paul Simon - to suggest that this Port Macquarie-based member has "Diamonds on the sole of his shoes" (so to speak).
For what else could bring about a ten (yes 10)-under par 46 nett, a score that assuredly is his best ever. Peter of course is our handicapper, but that matters not as he's a truly honest bloke and figures will be different on his card come pay-up today!
Those two chip-ins Pete could prove costly eh!
Shiny Srixons were late gifts for ball competition winners Bob Garner, Wayne Hutley, Grahem Irving, Steve Cameron, Wayne Cooper, Michael Hinchcliffe, Terry Hyland, Les Booth, Dennis O'Brien and Peter Hatton.
Putting winners were Kevin Hopping (A), Hall (B) and Mercer (C).
Nearest the pin at the third hole went to Hopping, Garner (B) and Cameron (C), whilst Robert Johnston (A) and Hinchcliffe (B) were winners at the 11th hole.
Chip-ins were also performed by Barry Pearson, Johnston and Garner.
Today's event is a 14-hole single stableford with the front nine dominating and visitors to our Nature's Wonderland are invited to take part. A phone call to our starter Brody (Clarke) on 65626291 is sound advice.
Everyone is welcome to participate in the weekly events held at the Kempsey Golf Club.
