Director of OEMG, Jason Errey, who started the company with his wife Rachael Stewart-Rattray in 2010, said that they were overwhelmed and excited to win the State award this year.
“It was fantastic to receive recognition for something that we have worked so hard on over many years,” Jason said.
“It has sometimes been challenging to innovate in such a well-established industry, where we are often competing for jobs against much larger companies.
“We were nominated as a finalist last year, but believe that what made the difference this year is that we now have some really strong case studies showing the significant cost savings and sustainability benefits that our innovation can provide.”
Jason said OEMG’s innovation helps to solve a critical issue present in infrastructure developments. “Research indicates that up to 50 per cent of public works infrastructure projects in Australia experience time or cost over-runs due to unforeseen geological conditions,” he said”
“To overcome geological uncertainties, there is currently a reliance on unsustainable practices such as engineering for ‘worst case’ assumptions or building in excessive risk contingencies, contributing to unsustainable construction and overspending of public funds.”
In order to address this issue, OEMG developed the Integrated Digital Ground Model (IDGM), a disruptive innovation which re-designs the entire ground modelling process.
“It also allows for integration of all available data (geotechnical, geophysical and environmental) into a 4D ground model within a simple GIS framework, improving communication and collaboration,” Jason said.
“Data can then be digitally exported into design packages such as business information modelling, which is at the leading edge in engineering design software.”
Jason sums up the difference when compared to more traditional methods: “Our IDGM process is similar to the difference between an X-Ray and a CAT scan. A surgeon would not operate today without a CAT scan”.
