THE latest NSW recorded crime statistics reveal that Kempsey, in practically all areas of crime, is two times the state average except for ‘break and enter into a dwelling’, which is three times the state average.

The report, released in December 2015, highlights the rate of criminal incidents per 100,000 population for major offences over 12 months from September 2014 to September 2015 as well as the number of recorded incidences for major offences for the same period.
The recorded criminal incident data presented in the report are based on information derived from the NSW Police Force Computerised Operational Policing System, so only those incidents which are reported to, or detected by, police are included.
The trends in recorded crime reflects movements in the underlying factors which influence the detection, reporting and recording of crime, as well as changes in the true level of crime in the community.
Not surprisingly for Kempsey locals, the highest category for the rate of criminal offences in Kempsey was ‘break and enter into a dwelling’, which is 3.1 times the state average for the 12 months to September 2015 compared to 2.7 times in 2014.
Of the number of recorded incidences for Kempsey there were 397 ‘break and enter into a dwelling’ offences for the 12 months to September 2015 compared to 362 in 2014.
Not coming far behind and second on the list for the rate of criminal offences in Kempsey is ‘steal from dwelling’ which is 2.5 times the state average for the 12 months to September 2015 compared to 2.2 in 2014.
Of the number of recorded incidences for Kempsey there were 213 ‘steal from dwelling’ offences for the 12 months to September 2015 compared to 190 in 2014.
Coming third on the list for the rate of criminal offences in Kempsey, but an offence rate that hasn’t changed in 12 months, is ‘break and enter non dwelling’ which is 2.4 times the state average for the 12 months to September 2015 compared to the same period in 2014.
Of the number of recorded incidences for Kempsey there were 120 ‘break and enter non dwelling’ offences for the 12 months to September 2015 compared to 121 in 2014.
‘Robbery with a firearm’ also came in at equal third at 2.4 times the state average with two offences recorded for the 12 months to September 2015 compared to 0 for the same period in 2014.
And finally, fourth on the rate of criminal offences in Kempsey is ‘assault domestic violence related’ coming in at 2.1 times the state average for the 12 months to September 2015 compared to 1.7 for the same period in 2014.
Of that, the number of recorded incidences for ‘assault domestic violence related’ rose from 197 recorded incidences in the 12 months to September 2014 to 242 recorded incidences in the 12 months to September 2015.
In what could be seen as a positive for Kempsey depending on whose eyes you are looking through, ‘assault non domestic violence related’ recorded incidences for Kempsey dropped from 234 incidences in 2014 to 167 in the 12 months to September 2015, however, that rate is still 1.4 times higher compared to the state average.
And finally another crime category that has dropped is ‘steal from person’ with only 19 recorded incidences for the 12 months to September 2015 compared to 30 recorded incidences for the 12 months to September 2014 but again that rate is still 0.8 times higher compared to the state average.
