Kay was announced as the winner of the NSW Carers award seniors award at a Carers Week ceremony at Parliament House on Monday, October 17.
The 72-year-old, who has cared for her 42-year-old son and 79-year-old husband for close to 25 years was thrilled to be awarded the significant prize.
“I’m pretty proud and very excited,” Kay said.
“There are so many people out there that aren’t recognised for the work they do day in and day out without much support.”
Kay thanked her family as well as Mission Australia’s Dympna Maslin, who nominated her for the award.
“Without my family I wouldn’t have been able to do what I did,” she said.
“It’s wonderful to know that Mission Australia had the confidence in my work as a carer to nominate me for such a prestigious award. I’m very grateful and excited to have won because it shows that people do care about carers. I’m proud to do the work I do, because it’s all in the name of love. To be acknowledged by the government, shows they support and respect what we do.”
Kay is also a strong voice in the carers advocacy space, being a pivotal and active member of local mental health carers groups for more than 20 years.
In her time she’s seen Kempsey’s support for mental health grow from one dedicated nurse to an entire specialised ward.
“It helps me keep my finger on the pulse,” she said of her involvement on various health committees.
Nicole Rowe, area manager at Mission Australia said through Kay's involvement in Mission Australia’s Family and Carers Mental Health Program, the organisation recognised and nominated Kay for the award.
“Kay is very dedicated to her role as a carer and a very strong advocate for people living with mental health issues,” Nicole said.
“She is very deserving of this award.”
