Landcare officer Ann Biasol laid out brochures, books and DVDs on soils, rocks, weeds, grasses, plants, trees, fish, animals and birds of our valley plus information on the local area Upper Macleay Vine Weeds Project.
Things got off to a red hot start when Jo McGoldrick , introduced by Hugo Marree, both from North Coast Local Land Services, got Phil Kempers to give a blow by blow description of the recent bushfire in Pappinbarra.
Next was Greg Egan from Kempsey Council, who organised this event, followed by local farmer, Lynne Berry, to explain the trials and tribulations of the battle against the Tropical Soda Apple infestations along the river.
Mayor Liz Campbell was even there to connect with Upper Macleay landowners.
Geoff Le Messurier from NCLLS is an old hand with new tricks on maximising stock carrying capacity on your farm.
Mick Thorman from NCLLS gave a heads up on wild dog control in the upper Macleay. Neighbours have to get together, work out a plan, then approach Local Land Services who may be able to arrange support and funding.
Beechwood Biological Solutions presenter Russell Orgill gave us a heads up on their increasingly popular product ‘Paratrooper’.
After lunch, wrapping it up was Landcare Project Officer Tom Macindoe working on the Y2K Project.
This is part of a micro and macro scale project from Cape York in far north Queensland to Wilson's Promontory in Victoria, the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative hopes to connect the whole lot together through landscape and wildlife corridors.
With the help of the NSW Environmental Trust, Tom's on the case so that, for instance, wildlife can move ‘s eastern reserves, along the Macleay Range, into the New England National Park and beyond.
There then followed a robust and vigorous discussion about soil erosion in waterways.
That ended a most enlightening and informative field day.
