The lure of $20,000 in cash and prizes has seen a record number of teams enter, where they’ll smoke up beef brisket, beef and pork ribs, chicken, pork, lamb and sausage.
The barbecue competition is an Australasian Barbecue Alliance sanctioned comp. It is run by Jay Beaumont and Simon Luke, who own and run the overall festival and the ABA Crew, managed by co-founder of the ABA Adam Roberts, will run the competition element of the overall festival.
“We will train over 100 judges on the Saturday and will judge just over 600 boxes of barbecue with more than 3600 pieces of barbecue,” Mr Roberts said.
“The ABA is based here in Port Macquarie but we have 36 competitions this year across Australia and New Zealand.
“We have just taken on a project to adjudicate and run a National BBQ Championship Series in New Zealand. Port Macquarie's event is one of 36 that we will adjudicate this year.”
Some like it hot and fast, others like it low and slow. Whatever their method, the results are always mouth watering with teams to serve up some of the best meat you have ever tasted.
On Sunday, September 9 as part of the festival, the Blues BBQ Wars will light up Town Green. There will be food stalls so everyone will have a chance to sample delicious food.
Performances from The Sweet Jelly Rolls, Dusty Boots, Minnie Marks, Ghost Road and Bounty Hunters will keep the huge crowd entertained – and huge it should be, with free entry to the festival.
Teams will travel from all over the country. In fact, all states except the Northern Territory are represented.
There's even a Kiwi pit master coming to compete with an Aussie team in the hope of taking out the top prize.
Points accrued from this competition go towards the Barbeques Galore Australian Barbecue Championship Series leader board.
