An international conglomerate of Coca Cola Amatil, Asahi, Carlton United Brewing, Coopers and Lion Nathan, Exchange for Change sent Saxbys an invoice for $300,000 payable by November 8 to enter into a supply agreement.
Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead said while our local environment will benefit under the new container deposit scheme, local manufacturing and jobs are on the line.
“This might be small change for the large multi nationals, but $300,000 is an impossible financial impost on small and medium business,” Stephen said.
“I’m standing up in support of local companies who create jobs that benefit the Myall Lakes community, whether you’re a company such as Saxbys, who have been making my favourite ginger beer since 1864, or the new Coastal Brewing Company in Forster.
“I demand Minister for the Environment Gabrielle Upton step in and provide a financial assistance package to help companies like Saxbys meet their financial obligations under the scheme.
Mr Bromhead is putting out a call - ‘stand with me and #supportsaxbys.’ Buy a bottle of Saxbys and post a picture on Twitter and Facebook with #supportsaxbys.
“Together we can all send a message to Minister Upton to #supportsaxbys and deliver a package to secure the 40 local jobs and an Icon of the Manning Valley,” Stephen said.
Mr Bromhead will be taking the campaign to State Parliament and asking his Parliamentary colleagues to join the campaign to #supportsaxbys.
