The musical was launched to world in 2014. Later, in 2016 a film version of the stage play was launched – the first cinematic film of an original live Australian rock musical.

Creator, Chris Dockrill was a Kempsey High School drama and English teacher while Ms Dockrill was a principal at West Kempsey High.

The quirky rock musical and film was first launched at Lou’s Cafe in Kempsey in September 2014 and later premiered at the The Dendy Opera Quays cinema in Sydney.

Since then, Doctor Moron has been an exploding success – selling out shows across the country and racking up a number of film awards.

Now, it will be the first film to screen at the London festival event on Sunday February 11 at the Crowne Plaza London Docklands. Dr Moron will begin in Theatre One, 9:45am. 

Very loosely based on the H.G. Wells novel ‘The Island of Dr Moreau’ and subsequent movies of the same name, the show follows the story of a shipwrecked couple who are captured by Rastafarian voodoo natives and sold to Doctor Moron who is intent on turning the human couple into animals. A range of quirky characters enliven the plot: Dr Moron’s laboratory assistants Fitter and Turner, funky preacher Brother Bob, leader of the voodoo natives Voodoo Valma and the slave-market junkie called Rubber Gloves.

Mr Dockrill said the opportunity to feature in the London film festival is an honour.

“This is a great honour. This was the first festival we approached. Not only is Moron a most unusual film in terms of genre and style, all submitted films must compete with hundreds (sometimes thousands) of submissions,” he said.

“This marks the next stage of Doc Moron’s journey. We hope that by promoting the show via the film, we connect with people who will be interested in taking the show to the next level,” he said.

Mr Dockrill has called the film the “child of Kempsey”.

“Dr Moron is an original Australian creation born in Kempsey,” he said.

Mr Dockrill is at pains to emphasise the nature of this unique film. 

“Moron is not a glitzy Hollywood studio production and it does not intend to be,” he said.

“And it is not an imitation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.  

“Moron is a film of a high-energy full-tilt rock musical performed live before a live audience.  What you get when you see the film is the live show on steroids,” he said.
