The show has been going since 2010 with 8 series and 170 episodes so far. Each week the show takes viewers on a journey across the railway networks of Great Britain and Ireland, detailing the history of how various destinations have changed.
Portillo also hosts sister series Great American Railway Journeys and Great Continental Railway Journeys, taking him across the US and Europe, respectively.
Great Australian Railway Journeys would sit very comfortably alongside the other shows and Kempsey's now 100 year old Railway Station will be a highlight.
The local community has been celebrating the centenary of Kempsey railway with a number of events and tributes held in 2017 including the Centenary of Kempsey railway commemoration weekend held at the end of November.
The celebrations included a family fun day at Kempsey Station with music, displays, food and of course – a train ride. A reunion luncheon was held with the weekend drawing to a close with morning tea and the cutting of the centenary cake.
The Argus also published weekly stories from the Macleay River Historical Society.
Historic tales tell of the many people and groups who were involved with the railway as well as the events surrounding it.
