On the afternoon of Friday 19 January, the couple discovered their entry purchased at Stuarts Point Newsagency was the only division one winning entry in Powerball draw 1131 on Thursday 18 January.
We thought we’d won a million dollars and we were dancing around.
In addition to winning division one, the couples’ 2-game PowerHit entry also won division two 19 times, bolstering their total prize to $3,184,274.35.
As the winning entry was not registered to a Players Club card, NSW Lotteries officials had no way to contact the mystery ticket holder to deliver the dream-come-true news.
In a statement from NSW Lotteries, the winning man explained how a quick trip to the newsagency to pick up a newspaper changed the lives of him and his wife.
“I came to get the newspaper and thought I had better check my entry,” he said.
“I handed the ticket to the lady at the counter and she had this funny look. I thought ‘maybe I’ve won some money’.
“We thought we’d won a million dollars and we were dancing around. Then she said ‘you’ve won $3 million’. It’s three million dollars! It just got better and better!”
The regular Powerball players had been in the region on holidays, with the win cementing their glowing opinion of the area.
“I was saying to my wife, before all of this, that this is the nicest place in the world. It just got a whole lot sweeter,” he said.
The couple intend on sharing their win with their family and will take more time to enjoy life.
“I won’t be doing 12 hour days anymore!,” the man laughed.
The Stuarts Point win comes just over a week since a mystery Melbourne entry won a massive $55 million Powerball jackpot which is yet to be claimed.
In September last year, an entry sold at Nambucca Heads, won $25 million.
Owner of the Stuarts Point Newsagency, Elaine Coleman said word has spread about the win with locals abuzz.
“This is the first division one winning entry we’ve sold. What a way to go! We’ve sold three division tow winning entries too over the years.”
The winning numbers in the Powerball draw 1132 on Thursday 18 January were 19, 35, 36, 13, 3 and 8 while the all-important Powerball number was 6.
