The store is holding a stock clearance sale on Thursdays and Fridays throughout February.
It will then close for the week of March 5 to prepare for a grand re-opening in the second week of March.
The lack of volunteers came about because branch president Marcia Cheers, who ran the shop for years, has been forced to retire due to an unfortunate illness.
Australian Red Cross regional manager for Northern NSW Janelle Gazaubon praised Marcia for her service to the organisation.
“Marcia has been dedicated as a volunteer for many years and her contribution is greatly appreciated,” she said.
Ms Gazaubon said the Red Cross didn’t have enough volunteers to staff the shop over the holiday period but a plan had been formed to keep the doors open.
“Red Cross Retail Management came up from Sydney and developed a strategy with the local volunteers, including clearing out the old stock, lots of specials, a fit out of the shop, and getting in new stock,” she said.
“We’re also going to do a recruitment drive for volunteers in February.”
Volunteers are needed to perform tasks such as customer service, sorting items and driving.
People interested in volunteering can contact the Red Cross office on 6561 4000.
“It’s a great opportunity for young people to gain experience in retail,” Ms Gazaubon said.
“We’re going to create a friendly and social atmosphere.
“It’s a lovely building and we need to make the most of it.”
