The flood watch means that people living or working along rivers and streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings, and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop.
Flood warnings will be issued by the Bureau of meteorology if the minor flood level is expected to be exceeded at key sites along the Macleay River.
The Macleay River catchment is likely to experience local overland flooding in low-lying areas.
The rain has forced people in doors and caused havoc across the valley with Kempsey Shire Council forced to close a number of roads and all sporting fields.
At 6pm 92.6mm of rain had fallen at Kempsey Airport since 9am today.
The deluge originates from a low pressure trough which lies off the northern parts of the New South Wales coast.
The trough is directing very moist and unstable onshore winds bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms, which may lead to local and riverine flooding.
A severe weather warning has been issued for the Mid North Coast.
Residents are reminded not to walk or play in flood waters. Farmers and oyster lease operators are advised to monitor rainfall and river levels and be ready to move their livestock, pumps and other equipment away from rising waters
