Put on by Oceanwatch Australia and the South West Rocks Beach Haul Fishermen, with the help of the Surf Life Saving Club, organiser David Mitchell was sweating bullets as the people just kept on coming.
“I’ve just been watching that line of people queuing for their mullet sandwich and waiting for it to get shorter,” David told the Macleay Argus.
“We started with 600 fillets and we’ve started cutting them in half so we’ll end up serving about 1000 fillets. But if it keeps going like this we’ll run out of fish and bread.
“It’s been beautiful weather – we couldn’t ask for better … this has been the biggest one yet.”
David said the big recent rains had washed out the rivers, and the Rocks fishermen had caught only enough for the event – which focuses on sustainable fishing – to go ahead.

As locals and visitors, some from as far away as Canada, patiently waited for a serve of barbecued sea mullet, entertainment was provided by Bonny Hills band The Ghost Road Boys.
“Everyone has said the fish tastes beautiful – it always does when you get it so fresh like that,” David said.
“Next year we might try and get some more fishermen involved, by that I mean some other fisheries.”

This annual free event gives the community the chance to connect with their local fishing industry and for Oceanwatch to demonstrate their role in educating fishers and the public about sustainable fishing practises. NSW DPI fisheries managers were also on hand to discuss the management of the industry.
